New Opportunity with Overlake Medical Center & Clinics for a Lead Perinatal Educator in the Parent & Baby Care Center.

The Perinatal Educator is responsible for providing instruction and support on topics pertinent to parents during the childbearing years, and throughout the family/parenting process.

This role liaisons with Community Education and our community providers. Responsible for developing, scheduling, and teaching classes. Also, standardizing curriculum and educator oversight.

Other Lead duties include:

  • Ensures that course curriculum is evidence-based and up-to-date.  Review and update curriculum annually to ensure that curriculum is compliant with the processes and procedures of Overlake Hospital and in compliance with current recommendations by American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), Academy of Certified Birth Educators (ACBE),  American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the Washington State Hospital Association (WSHA). Ensures that curriculum is being consistently used by all educators.
  • Serves as liaison between the OB/GYN physicians and the remaining perinatal educators. Ensure physicians are getting packets. Regular communication with remaining instructors including bi-weekly email update, phone contact at least monthly and more often as needed and quarterly staff meeting. Quarterly visit to lead nurse at each OB office delivering at Overlake Hospital. Check phone messages from OBs and respond within two business days of the message being left.
  • Primary responsibility for development of annual class calendar and instructor scheduling on an ongoing and quarterly basis.  Distributes class rosters weekly.
  • Works with Marketing to confirm schedules and review and update class descriptions on a quarterly basis.
  • Respond to phone call and email inquiries about perinatal class offerings within 2 business days.
  • Ensures that perinatal educator annual continuing education requirements are met, including tracking, documentation and evaluation of CE summaries. Perform annual observation of all educators and provide input for annual evaluations.
  • Trains new instructors ensuring mastery of instruction skills and establish preceptor relationship with another educator. Monitors progress with preceptor.
  • Addresses concerns with nurses, physicians and staff regarding patient instruction.   Elevates issues to management.
  • Ensures that classrooms are supplied with instructor materials.  Facilitates nursing student observations with local colleges.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:  High school graduate required.

Professional Licensure/Certification/Registration:  Must meet one of the following five levels of experience and/or credentials:

  • Current Washington State RN with one (1) year of experience in childbirth education or completed coursework in childbirth education or,
  • Current Washington State LPN with one (1) year of experience in childbirth education or completed coursework in childbirth education or,
  • One of the following certifications:   ASPO/Lamaze, International Childbirth Education Association (ICEA) or CBE one year certification through technical college, or
  • Currently enrolled in ASPO/Lamaze, International Childbirth Education Association (ICEA) or CBE one year certification through technical college.   Must pass certification requirements within two (2) years of being hired to remain in position, or
  • Two years of experience as a childbirth educator in a hospital setting.

Experience:      Hospital experience in OB and/or teaching experience as a childbirth educator preferred.
